epistemological: (back of neck rub)

Yes, well, I do. Not about your rubbish opinions. But I care about you not ending up in the void.

Did you know about this place before you came here?

Not to be unkind, but that sounds very much like the answer is 'no'.

But also that that lack of fear is almost certainly predicated on not knowing what the hell is going on.

I can give you about a thousand reasons to fear the unknown. I just don't think that would be productive.

Fear is something I am intimately acquainted with. In fact, I would go so far as to say I'm something of an expert.

Would you like the simple answer or the true one?

I'm not going to go into it properly if you're just asking me that for a lark.

I wouldn't lie to you. They just address the question differently.
epistemological: (you're... kidding)

Then the truth is this:

The worst fear is the one you're feeling in the moment. Because they're all the 'worst' at what they are, how they work, what they do.

The most overwhelming? The Buried, without a doubt. Too Close I Cannot Breathe. The Forever Deep Below Creation. There is nothing like it, the endless press of it, the weight as it bears down but also squeezes but also gives you just enough room to breathe, just enough room to hope until the next moment when you're caught, you're stuck, there is nothing and no one, no up or down, and you hardly know where you end and where the pressure begins.

The most invasive? The Corruption, of course. The Crawling Rot. Filth. Feeling yourself being eaten, devoured, taken from you piece by piece, your skin literally crawling, infestation and infection, what you are becoming alien and dangerous and more of it changing to devour you by the second. Hundreds and thousands and even millions of tiny parts eating you away, feeding on you, making you less than nothing, before moving onto the next.

The most omnipresent? The Dark, of course. The Forever Blind. The Void, the completely unknown and unknowable, for it is ever and always where there is no light and no matter how much you may try, there is always a place the light cannot reach. It's where monsters come from and where dangers live. When you're enveloped in the dark, nothing and nowhere is safe and anything that emerges wishes you harm. Even when you find the light, the Dark is there, just behind your eyelids, waiting.

The most awful? The Desolation. The Lightless Flame. Blackened Earth, the Ravening Burn... Loss, pain, destruction, not because of anything you can prevent or do, but because 'shit happens'. Lives destroyed before they started, chances dashed before they could ever come to fruition. Everything you've ever hoped or dreamed of or wanted tumbling down around you and falling apart, never to be gathered again, burned to ash. Your 'Fate' dropping away, leaving you with no purpose, no direction, no anything.

The most inescapable? The End, of course. Terminus. The Coming End That Waits For All And Cannot Be Ignored. Normally, I'd say I don't have to explain that one, but with you, I think I will. The fear of death itself, uncaring and unstoppable. It claims all eventually; oh I'm sure you'll tell me 'not you' but even whatever draws you back will eventually flicker out. Planets do. Stars. Whole galaxies. Everything has an end and the fear of it is one of the most universal because... what can you say, really? It's the reality for everyone and everything, no matter how big the scale.

...shall I go on?
